Addictive Disorders

Dr Benga's expertise covers a broad area of addictive disorders including opioid addiction (heroin, methadone, pain killers such as Vicodin, Percocet, OxyContin, etc.), cocaine and other stimulants addiction (such as methamphetamines), alcoholism, benzodiazepines and other sedatives addiction, nicotine addiction.

In treating addictive disorders her approach combines medication management (when medication available for the specific disorder exists) with relevant psychotherapy for increasing motivation and facilitating behavioral change.

Suboxone Detoxification & Maintenance

Suboxone ( buprenorphine/naloxone) is a medication approved for office based opioid addiction treatment. It may be used with very good results for detoxification from opioids, as well as for opioid maintenance treatment.

A critical part of treatment is the initial transition from the abused opioid to Suboxone; this is called induction, a process that can precipitate withdrawal. Good preparation, an experienced treater and learning how the medication works are key elements for a smooth induction.

Dr. Benga has extensive experience with Suboxone detoxification and maintenance, including developing a protocol to induce long term methadone-maintenance patients to Suboxone, and teaching the Suboxone course to other physicians.

Mood and Anxiety disorders

A very common complaint from patients seeking psychiatric treatment is of not being able to fully enjoy life - of feeling tense, worried, irritable or chronically sad. Most of the time, these are symptoms of a mood or anxiety disorder. When symptoms are mild, they can be successfully treated with psychotherapy alone; more often though, a combination of psychotherapy with medication management is required.
